UCC is neither desirable nor necessary in the context of the state of Sikkim as of now: JAC passed resolution

Fangtok, July 2: A big no to Uniform Civil Code(UCC) in Sikkim, Joint Action Council (JAC) organized a day-long symposium on UCC that concluded in a big no for UCC by passing a One point resolution is 'In light of article 371 F and prevailing customary laws of various communities of Sikkim it is submitted that the proposal for Uniform Civil Code is neither desirable nor necessary in the context of the state of Sikkim as of now. Today's symposium had participation of the political parties and all the intellectuals, lawyers and NGOs. In a few days to follow the passed resolution will be submitted to the Law Commission as one month for feedback and suggestions on UCC will end on 12 July. Today's symposium saw the participation of various political but sadly from the ruling party no representatives attended the symposium as the ruling party is the main stakeholder for the issue as it has to take a final call on this matter. Pasang Sherpa, Vice President of JAC said "This is a very important issue as it concerns the future of Sikkim but no representative from the ruling party came to attend if they cannot make a decision but they can at least discuss but they didn't come we are disappointed but still we have passed a resolution unanimously and today symposium has decided not to implement the UCC in Sikkim keeping Sikkim's distinct identity under the article 371 F and in days to come we will submit to the Law Commission. Meanwhile, Tseten Tashi Bhutia, Convenor, Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee (SIBLAC) and also member of National Commission for Minorities said "at this moment neither we oppose or welcome it but once the draft is being framed by 22nd Law commission as 21st commission has already rejected so we will see how it has been adhere whether they will keep in mind Sikkim"a safeguarding article 371 F or not after that only we will decided and now we not welcoming it. Must tell, Law Commission has sought views and is expected to come up with its recommendations soon on Universal Civil Code in this regard commission has sought feedback and suggestion which needed to be filed will 12 July 2023.
