However, this time, the football tournament being held at the Kyongsa Playground in Geyzing has been dragged into controversy after questions were raised regarding its management and the role of the referees.
On the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, an open football tournament is being organized at the Kyongsa Playground by the Yangthang Sporting Club. However, sports enthusiasts and social media users are expressing dissatisfaction over the execution, match schedules, and the refereeing.
In particular, the practice of conducting half a match on one day and finishing the remaining part on the next day to wrap up the tournament has sparked widespread discussion. The Kyongsa Playground is one of the key grounds built under the Government of India’s 'Khelo India' initiative. Once fully operational, it is expected to host multiple sports disciplines. However, construction work on the field is not yet fully complete. A marathon track has been carved outside the iron fencing of the ground, and it appears it will take some time before the remaining construction is finished.
Meanwhile, public interest has also heightened regarding where and how the Geyzing District Administration will host the main Independence Day event this year. As Independence Day sports activities take place at a major ground like Kyongsa, questions are being raised about administrative coordination, presence, and supervision.
While Independence Day in Sikkim has traditionally been celebrated on a grand scale centered around football, sports being dragged into controversy this time presents a serious matter for reflection for the organizers and concerned authorities.
