The Government of Sikkim has issued a health advisory following reports of an upsurge in severe acute respiratory illness cases in China linked to Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). On January 7, 2025, the Chief Secretary held a meeting with the Health and Family Welfare Department to assess the potential threat and review preparedness.

About HMPV First identified in the Netherlands in 2001, HMPV is now prevalent globally. It typically causes mild respiratory illnesses but can lead to severe complications in immunocompromised individuals.

Transmission and Symptoms HMPV spreads through close contact with infected individuals, coughing, sneezing, handshakes, and contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include:

Cough

Runny nose

Fever

Sore throat

Shortness of breath

Preventive Measures The public is advised to:

Wash hands frequently with soap and water using the SUMAN-K method.

Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette.

Clean contaminated surfaces regularly.

Avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals.

The Health Department assures robust surveillance systems are in place and emphasizes there is no cause for alarm in India. However, citizens are urged to follow preventive measures and seek medical advice if symptoms arise.
