Panighatta, Darjeeling 28. Nov.24: A joint operation involving the Military Intelligence team of Sukna's Trishakti Corps, Darjeeling Police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was conducted on Tuesday at the residence of Francis Ekka (47) in Belgachi Tea Estate, under the jurisdiction of Panighatta Police Post in Mirik block.
The operation followed an intelligence tip-off received by the Sukna-based Military Intelligence unit regarding Ekka’s alleged involvement in the possession and sale of unidentified Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) equipment and documents.
Upon reaching the location, Ekka reportedly claimed that the material in his possession was radioactive, prompting the deployment of an NDRF team to assess the potential radiation threat. However, after thorough examination, the NDRF confirmed that the equipment and materials were not radioactive.
Authorities also discovered forged DRDO documents in Ekka's possession, which he allegedly used to support his illicit activities. Following the recovery of these documents, Ekka was detained by the West Bengal Police for further interrogation. Investigations are underway to determine the origin of the materials and the extent of his involvement in the alleged sale of DRDO-related equipment.
The incident has raised serious security concerns, and authorities are examining whether Ekka had any accomplices or links to sensitive defense-related operations.
Further updates are awaited as the investigation progresses.
