The Department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) inaugurated the 'Creative Hub' at Green Park, Jorethang, during the Jorethang Maghey Mela 2025. This unique initiative serves as a vibrant platform to celebrate and promote Sikkim's creative entrepreneurs and their craftsmanship. The Green Park now hosts many distinct creative spaces, each highlighting the innovative work of local entrepreneurs. The tent-laden Creative Hub has been described as a living museum of entrepreneurial spirit in Sikkim. Spotlight on Unique Stalls Crafted Fibres Crafted Fibres, spearheaded by community-based weaving craftsman and veterinary doctor, Chewang Norbu Bhutia, specializes in premium Angora wool products. From shawls and stoles to hats and carpets, their creations have already garnered international attention. “We’re receiving inquiries from abroad, which is a testament to the global appeal of our craft,” Dr. Chewang shares. Oviya Art Workshop This art space is managed by Artist Sagar Subba and Diwakar Lamechaney, the General Secretary of Oviya Art Circle. The workshop offers artworks from Sikkim, Nepal, and beyond, catering to all tastes and sizes. Its highlight is an outdoor art workshop where children can engage in painting activities, with kits provided. Visitors can also have their portraits painted on-site, adding a personal touch to the experience. Green Pastures Cafe A venture by Gangtok-based Manny Lepcha, Green Pastures Cafe is a roadside café concept designed to bring fresh branding and innovation to Sikkim’s café scene. Although still in its early stages, Manny is optimistic about its potential. Waling Food Hub Owned by Namchi-based entrepreneur Alap Rai, Waling Food Hub is a pure vegetarian fast-food chain offering hygienic and affordable meals. Alap’s vision is to cater to all food lovers who appreciate vegetarian cuisine prepared with care and quality. Natives PDL Phurba Doma Lepcha from Gangtok and Surya Gurung from Jorethang co-manage this arts and merchandise collection stall. Phurba, owner of Vajra Gangtok’s Arts and Tattoo Studio, collaborates with Surya, the proprietor of Sol Imprints in Jorethang. Together, they create modern cultural fusion designs printed on various merchandise. Their expertise also extends to logo design, graphic design, and illustrations, showcasing the creativity of Sikkimese artists. Sikkim Herald Museum Located at the entrance of the Creative Hub, the Sikkim Herald Museum showcases a rich collection of newspapers in English, Nepali, Limboo, Lepcha, and Bhutia. This exhibit provides a glimpse into Sikkim's linguistic diversity and media heritage. Fostering Local Talent Joint Director of IPR highlighted the primary goal of the Creative Hub: providing a platform for local entrepreneurs and skilled individuals, particularly those trained by the State Institute of Capacity Building, Sikkim. The initiative not only promotes local businesses but also celebrates the rich cultural and creative heritage of Sikkim. The Creative Hub at Jorethang Maghey Mela stands as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and artistic talents of Sikkim’s people, offering a glimpse into the region’s innovative future.
