A horrific catastrophe occurred on Wednesday 15th January night when a private vehicle crashed nearly 300 feet into a gorge in Lang Khola in Gerethang hamlet, killing five persons. The event occurred around 9:30 p.m., just 500 meters from the wedding site from which the group was returning. Superintendent of Police Tshering Sherpa noted that the motorist appeared to have failed to negotiate a turn, resulting in the accident. "The driver may not have paid attention to the turn," . The Sikkim Police are looking into the reason of the tragedy, including the possibility of drunk driving. Autopsies are being performed at Geyzing District Hospital to identify any contributory variables. The deceased have been named as Abhirman Dahal (51), Abhi Kishore Dahal (51), Chandra Bahadur Mangar (40), Karna Bahadur Gurung (38) of Nessa Tashiding village, and Jeewan Karki (38) of Yangtey village. The automobile involved in the accident was apparently owned by one of the victims. As the inquiry progresses, more information will become available.
