British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s impromptu street performance on Bengaluru’s Church Street was abruptly halted by local police on Sunday 9th February. The incident occurred during Sheeran’s India tour, sparking debates about public performances and city regulations. Meanwhile, in Sikkim, speculation continues over the possibility of Sheeran performing at the state’s 50th Statehood Day celebrations.

On Sunday morning, Ed Sheeran began a surprise performance on Church Street, drawing a large crowd of fans and passersby. However, within a minute, Bengaluru police intervened, citing the lack of official permission and concerns over footpath encroachment. Officers unplugged Sheeran’s microphone and attempted to disperse the gathering.

In response, Sheeran addressed the crowd, stating, “We’ve permission to be here, but this policeman is shutting it down. See you later!” He later posted on Instagram that his team had secured prior approval for the performance. The local police, however, denied granting any such permission. According to Cubbon Park police, no request was made for the performance, and public performances on footpaths or roads are prohibited due to inconvenience to pedestrians.

Sanjay Kumar, president of the Church Street and Rest House Association, defended the police action, stating that while the performance was a unique experience, formal permissions are necessary for such events. He suggested that Sheeran’s team could have approached authorities to arrange a suitable venue.

The incident has led to criticism from Sheeran’s fans and music enthusiasts, with some calling it a missed opportunity to showcase Bengaluru’s reputation as a hub for cultural and artistic expression.

While Sheeran’s performance in Bengaluru was cut short, discussions are ongoing regarding his possible visit to Sikkim. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) has reportedly proposed inviting Sheeran to perform at Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day celebrations.

The proposed event aims to promote Sikkim as a global cultural destination and boost tourism. However, the plan has faced criticism from opposition parties, who argue that hosting a high-profile international artist is an unnecessary expenditure. The State BJP and the Citizen Action Party (CAP) have questioned the prioritization of such an event, suggesting that resources should be allocated to healthcare, infrastructure, and employment generation instead.

CM Golay has clarified that the concert would be funded through private sponsorships, with no government expenditure involved. He emphasized that such an event could significantly benefit the state’s tourism and hospitality industries.

As of now, there is no official confirmation from Ed Sheeran’s management regarding his participation in the Sikkim event. Given his ongoing India tour, scheduling conflicts and logistical challenges could impact the decision.

The possibility of Sheeran performing in Sikkim remains uncertain. If the proposal is accepted, it would mark a significant cultural milestone for the state. However, if he declines, the initiative may be reconsidered or replaced with alternative plans.

Authorities and organizers are expected to provide further updates on the event’s status in the coming weeks.
