A discovery with the potential to mark a historic turning point in the archaeological history of the Sub-Himalayan region has been made in West Sikkim. Renowned archaeologist and scholar of ancient history Hari Chandra Sharma, along with his colleague Dr. Saurabh Singh, has identified a possible Megalithic site in Middle Mangmoo Ward under Dentam Block of Gyalshing District. This significant achievement is the result of years of sustained research by the scholars, who have been studying the continuity of history from the Neolithic period onward in Sikkim and the greater Sub-Himalayan region. Based on preliminary findings, the discovery is being regarded as one of the most important archaeological breakthroughs in Sikkim to date. Surface surveys and initial observations reveal clear indicators of Megalithic structures in the Middle Mangmoo area. According to Sharma, as there are no official records of any Megalithic site previously discovered in Sikkim, this finding could open an entirely new gateway to understanding Sub-Himalayan history. Comparative studies with similar sites in Northeast India suggest that the site could be around 2,000 years old or even older, although further scientific investigation is essential to confirm this.
